Exhibition identity for Alistair McClymont's show at the Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh. Like McClymont's work itself, a systematic approach is taken to the design, adding two points to the stroke of each character then displacing at a central axis. The human eye is capable of reading the characters despite their distortion.

Perhaps my favorite 'hotel' in the world, CPH Living in Copenhagen embraces it's Danish heritage: nautical roots, contemporary design, and welcoming personality. Inspired by the architecture of the boat, its interior, and furnishings I proposed an identity which relies on five extracted shapes, used to create increasingly complex and telling illustrations themselves. Published in Infinite Pattern by Ginko Press.

Branding, Packaging

Following the completed design and successful opening of Ashley Christensen's Beasley's Chicken + Honey a collaborative beer with Sean Lilly Wilson's Fullsteam Brewery seemed only natural. An ale brewed specifically to complement fried chicken and honey. The merging of two distinct brands into one package. Like any true collaboration, ideas spawned more ideas and ultimately one beer became two (a White and a Dark for their respective chicken cuts) calling for two bottle labels.

<img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/WhiteDark.png" width="650" height="501" width_o="650" height_o="501" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/WhiteDark_o.png" data-mid="21071591" border="0" align="left"/>

Both brands used aggressive display typefaces—Beasley's harkening wood type and Fullsteam pulling from steampunk industrialism along with wood cut illustration. To connect the new Beasley's brand with the established Fullsteam look I expanded, rather than simplified, what was an already active combined type program.

<img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Screen Shot 2012-09-05 at 4.49.03 PM.png" width="650" height="479" width_o="650" height_o="479" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Screen Shot 2012-09-05 at 4.49.03 PM_o.png" data-mid="21114384" border="0" align="left"/>

A round-to-square slab serif was needed to bridge their typographic gap. Not finding exactly what we wanted, I looked into creating a custom honeycomb typeface, which proved too literal. An altered Quatro Ultra Slab finally fit the bill matching the industrial with the illustrative, the angled with the arched.

<img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Screen Shot 2012-09-05 at 4.50.46 PM_7.png" width="650" height="486" width_o="650" height_o="486" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Screen Shot 2012-09-05 at 4.50.46 PM_7_o.png" data-mid="21141238" border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Durham.png" width="650" height="373" width_o="650" height_o="373" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Durham_o.png" data-mid="21071611" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/BeautifulBeer.png" width="650" height="423" width_o="650" height_o="423" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/BeautifulBeer_o.png" data-mid="21071613" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Back.png" width="650" height="554" width_o="650" height_o="554" src_o="http://payload86.cargocollective.com/1/0/395/4023934/Back_o.png" data-mid="21071615" border="0" align="left"/> Final labels feature complementing color palettes, die cut honeycomb front, and a subtle nod to the three locales from which ingredients come—Durham, Raleigh, and Tarboro.

Ashley Christensen takes fried chicken seriously. Always with honey. Pairs it with a rosé. For Beasley's Chicken + Honey, her second shop, I established a strong typographic identity rooted in woodcut type pulling from her southern heritage but in a contemporary context.

All applications of the brand are handcrafted. Door signage is painted with 1-Shot Sign Painters Enamel. Exterior signage wraps twenty feet long, painted directly on the bricks. Business cards are letter pressed on double thick chip board (looks great with honey and grease stains). The only menu in the place is a twenty two foot long installation on an entirely chalkboard wall. Bathroom signs, I carved by hand out of walnut. In 30 years the entire place will have aged with grace. No cracked vinyl here. Photography by James Tupper.
